A hidden leak rarely announces itself. By the time water is dripping through a ceiling, it has usually been running behind a wall or under a floor for weeks. The good news: your home gives off warning signs long before it gets to that point. Here are the ones our plumbers see most often.
1. A water bill that crept up
If nothing about your usage changed but the bill did, water is going somewhere. Compare a few months of statements. A steady climb with no explanation is one of the clearest early clues.
2. The meter moves when everything is off
Turn off every tap and appliance, then watch your water meter for fifteen minutes. If the dial keeps ticking over, you have a leak somewhere on the supply side.
3. Damp patches and bubbling paint
Discoloured patches on walls or ceilings, peeling paint or bubbling plaster all point to moisture behind the surface. The stain is often some distance from the actual leak, because water tracks along beams before it shows.
4. A musty smell that won’t shift
Persistent damp encourages mould, and mould has a distinctive earthy smell. If a room smells musty even after cleaning, moisture is likely trapped somewhere out of sight.
5. Warm spots on the floor
A leak on a hot water line can warm a patch of floor above it. If one area of tile feels noticeably warmer underfoot, it’s worth investigating.
6. The sound of running water
A faint hiss or trickle when no tap is open is a genuine leak you can hear. Quiet the house, listen near walls and floors, and you can often locate roughly where it is.
7. Reduced water pressure
If pressure drops across the whole house, water may be escaping before it reaches your taps. Combined with any of the signs above, it’s a strong reason to get the system checked.
What to do next
